LegalZoom vs Swyft FilingsDo you need to form a limited liability company (LLC), but you’re not comfortable enough with the compliance requirements to go the DIY route? That’s why companies like Swyft Filings and LegalZoom offer affordable and convenient LLC service.

Still, it can be tricky to discern which one would best serve your business.

This Swyft Filings vs LegalZoom comparison will dive into the commonalities and differences between these two providers, helping you decide which is the better choice to start your LLC.

Quick Summary

— Swyft Filings wins, but we recommend shopping around —

There’s no doubt that Swyft Filings and LegalZoom are two of the top LLC formation service providers available, and they’re both capable of forming your new company quickly and correctly. Still, Swyft Filings does have some advantages that make them our preferred pick and a great LegalZoom alternative.

First and foremost, Swyft Filings has a low $49 price point for LLC service, which is much cheaper than the $79 it will cost you to form an LLC with LegalZoom. Furthermore, Swyft Filings receives better customer reviews than LegalZoom does.

Why We Recommend Shopping Around

🥇ZenBusinessStarts at $39ExcellentAbsolutely
🥈Swyft FilingsStarts at $49GreatYes
🥉LegalZoomStarts at $79Fair It Depends

While Swyft Filings and LegalZoom both have plenty of positives, neither of them are among our absolute favorite companies in this industry. For nearly all of our readers looking for an LLC service, we recommend ZenBusiness.

ZenBusiness is just $39 rather than the $79 price tag LegalZoom charges or $49 from Swyft Filings. Plus, they include a full year of registered agent service and a lot of other important features. Plus, they have fabulous customer reviews, with thousands of positive reviews all over the web.

6 Things They Have In Common

1) Affordable: Swyft Filings and LegalZoom can both save you lots of money over hiring a lawyer to form your LLC, while also not leaving you alone to figure it out on your own.

2) Customer Support: Along those same lines, these companies have extensive customer support networks. If you have questions or concerns, they’re just a phone call or email away, which means you don’t have to spend hours of your valuable time trying to find the answers yourself.

3) Experience: They’re both experienced companies, and they each serve a large volume of customers every year. These are legitimate operations with lots of existing clients, and they’re wholly capable of forming your LLC.

4) Satisfaction Guarantees: Swyft Filings and LegalZoom both have 100% satisfaction guarantees, which is a welcome safety net. If you’re unhappy for any reason, you can simply request a refund and they’ll provide it, no questions asked.

5) Additional Services: If you need services beyond formation, they can help. Both offer many features from registered agent service to federal tax ID numbers and much more. Think of them as one-stop shops for business services.

6) Efficiency: Do you need your LLC formed in a hurry? Swyft Filings really lives up to their name with some of the quickest turnaround times in the industry, and they also have expedited service available. As for LegalZoom, they structure their turnarounds based on which level of service you purchase, and their formations can be completed in as little as a week.

Side by Side Comparisons

With a base rate of $49, Swyft Filings is a full $30 cheaper than LegalZoom’s starting price of $79.

Clearly, paying $49 instead of $79 is always preferable. However, while pricing is always important, it’s not everything. Still, as you’ll soon discover, Swyft Filings has more advantages than just cost.

Swyft Filings offers some welcome features that LegalZoom doesn’t provide, including a 30-minute business tax consultation and a free domain name for one year. In addition, they include access to their ComplianceGuard company alerts system which keeps track of your filing deadlines.

For LegalZoom’s part, they include a banking resolution to help you open business checking and savings accounts, which Swyft Filings does not provide.

While we would prefer to see these companies include registered agent service (as some of their top competitors like ZenBusiness and Northwest Registered Agent do), Swyft Filings still does an acceptable job with their included features. On the other hand, neither of these companies is terribly impressive in this category.

LegalZoom serves a huge volume of customers, with more than 2 million business clients served since they started offering online business services in 2001. Swyft Filings can’t touch that level of experience, but they’ve already served thousands of customers since they opened in 2012.

Customer Support

Swyft Filings has an excellent service department, and their customers frequently mention that fact in their reviews. They’re available from 10 am to 7 pm ET, Monday through Friday.

LegalZoom is a bit more hit or miss with their support, which is no big surprise seeing as they are such a large operation. One thing most clients seem to appreciate about LegalZoom is their extended support hours. They take calls from 10 am to 8 pm ET on weekdays, and they’re even open from 10 am to 7 pm ET on weekends.

Turnaround Times

One difference between Swyft Filings and LegalZoom is the way they calculate their turnarounds. With Swyft Filings it varies based on your state of formation (which can range from a couple of days all the way up to several weeks), whereas with LegalZoom they base their estimates on what level of service you purchase from them. Their cheapest package is Economy with a 30 business day turnaround, followed by Standard (15 days), and the top-shelf Express Gold (7-10).

We strongly prefer Swyft Filings’ method because we don’t appreciate LegalZoom intentionally slowing down formations based on how much money you spent on their platform. Furthermore, Swyft Filings really lives up to its name, as it typically forms businesses slightly faster than most competitors.

Order Tracking

As soon as you place your order, Swyft Filings creates an account for you on their website where you can check your status. LegalZoom recently added a similar tracking tool.

Registered Agent Service

Every LLC in America is required to designate a registered agent, which is a person or business entity that receives important document deliveries (like service of process) from your state government, informs you of the receipt, then forwards the documents to you. This is so crucial because the state needs to have a reliable means of contacting your business at any time.

Swyft Filings charges $149 annually for registered agent service, while LegalZoom sets its price at $299 per year for the exact same service (or $249 for your first year if you add this service to your LLC formation order). Neither of them includes registered agent service with your LLC formation.

Customer Reviews

Swyft Filings gets excellent customer feedback, with more than 75,000 online reviews and high average scores. Swyft Filings customers frequently praise the efficiency of their services, and also the quality of their customer service department.

LegalZoom has around 4,700 reviews of their own, but they don’t quite match the quality of Swyft Filings’ feedback. Their ratings are a bit more hit or miss in nature. While they do have plenty of happy customers who are pleased with their services, they also have a number of clients who bring up issues like billing confusion or inconsistent customer service.

Ease of Use

Both of these companies can make your life as an entrepreneur much easier. Their services are easy to use and their websites are a breeze to navigate. No matter which one you choose, your formation will be much simpler than the DIY route.

Additional Services

Both Swyft Filings and LegalZoom present many other services to their customers, and there is a significant amount of overlap between the offerings of these two companies. For instance, they both offer registered agent service, annual reports, EIN acquisition, business licensing research, amendments, and more.

However, LegalZoom also has quite a few services available that Swyft Filings doesn’t offer, which is largely due to the fact that LegalZoom provides many personal services in addition to their business offerings. Along these lines, LegalZoom offers last will and testament, power of attorney, living trust, divorce paperwork, and property deeds.

Best Service for LLC Formation?

Choose Swyft Filings if You Are:

If saving money is a priority, Swyft Filings is certainly less expensive than LegalZoom. In addition, if you value positive customer feedback and a reliable, friendly service department, they’re an excellent choice.

Choose LegalZoom if You Are:

Final Verdict

While both of the LLC services in this comparison offer good overall value and have formed thousands of businesses, we think Swyft Filings is the better option. Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers.

If I Decide to Use Swyft Filings, Which Package Should I Choose?

We like two of Swyft Filings’ LLC formation packages quite a bit, so we would recommend either their $49 Basic or $149 Standard option. The Basic package includes the full formation of your LLC, along with their online corporate compliance tool.

The Standard package adds an EIN and an operating agreement. Depending on your budget, they’re both solid choices. However, neither of these packages holds a candle to ZenBusiness’ $39 offer or IncFile’s free LLC formation service.

Is LegalZoom Good Compared to Other LLC Formation Services?

While LegalZoom is one of the most popular and well-known LLC formation services, it’s a stretch to say they’re the best. Check out our comparison reviews between LegalZoom and other top LLC services to see how good they actually are:

LegalZoom vs:

Does Swyft Filings Handle Extra State Requirements Like New York Publication?

Swyft Filings does offer state-specific services like publication requirements. On their website, they say that “there are certain states that will require you to publish a notice of business formation in the local newspaper(s) such as Arizona, New York, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania.

The requirement can be met by using a filing service such as Swyft Filings.” Sounds good to us! For what it’s worth, LegalZoom offers no assistance with publication requirements.

Which Service Has Fewer Upsells?

This category is a big difference between these two services. Swyft Filings barely has any upsells at all, but they’re quite logical and presented in a reasonable manner.

As for LegalZoom, they’re actually the reason we started putting this question in our FAQ sections. LegalZoom presents you with $1,080 worth of upsell attempts before you even select which LLC formation package you want to buy. How would you possibly know which services you want to add to your formation when you haven’t even chosen your package yet?

Do These Services Share My Information With Third Parties?

Swyft Filings has some offers on their package select screen that are actually attempts to share your personal info with third-party partners.

Specifically, the 30-minute business tax consultation, the free domain name, and the free business website and web hosting are all provided through other companies, and Swyft Filings doesn’t even tell you what those other companies are. LegalZoom does not do this that we’ve noticed, instead focusing their energy on presenting their own products and services to their clients.

Does Either of These Services Have a Refund Policy?

LegalZoom has one of our favorite refund policies in the LLC services industry. You have 60 days to request your refund, and they will provide it within five business days of your request. There are no convenience fees or strings attached.

Not to be outdone, Swyft Filings has a 100% money-back guarantee that says anyone requesting a refund will receive one ― they don’t even have a time limit for placing your request.

Which LLC Formation Website Is Faster?

Swyft Filings have some of the fastest processing times in this industry. In other words, they really live up to their name! Their turnaround times vary depending on each state’s capability to process formations, and they can be as quick as just a couple of days or as slow as several weeks.

LegalZoom takes an entirely different approach, instead basing their turnaround times on which level of LLC formation service you purchase from them. If you buy their Economy package, it’ll take 30 business days to get your LLC formed. With their Standard package, you can cut that down to 15 business days, and the Express Gold package gets it done in 7-10 business days.

Can I Just Form an LLC On My Own, Without a Service?

The DIY option is always available to you, regardless of which state you form your LLC in. We would just like to mention that we don’t typically recommend this option because there’s no one set way to form an LLC in the United States.

Instead, each state has its own set of requirements that can vary quite a bit from other states, so you’ll need to learn the details of your formation state’s rules and regulations. Furthermore, the DIY route doesn’t provide the same peace of mind that we receive from reputable companies like Swyft Filings and LegalZoom.
