Side by Side Comparisons

Pricing – Huge Difference

Rocket Lawyer charges $99.99 + state fee to form an LLC. On the other hand, IncFile has formation service that starts at just $0 + state fee. (See details)

On the surface, it’s clear that IncFile can save you some money. After all, who would rather pay $99.99 for the same service you can get for free? However, the advantages of IncFile in this comparison go deeper than this, as you’ll notice in our next section. As it turns out, even if they charged the exact same price, we would still strongly prefer IncFile due to their inclusion of more valuable features in their LLC formation packages.

Features

Compared to IncFile, Rocket Lawyer offers a pretty barebones LLC service package. IncFile includes a full year of registered agent service and a business tax consultation with your formation package, while Rocket Lawyer only gives you the basic essentials of formation.

However, Rocket Lawyer also offers a comprehensive legal services subscription for $39.99 per month which includes formation service at no extra charge for new subscribers. In addition, this subscription also provides legal documents with attorney review, consultation with lawyers, discounts on attorney services, and more.

Even if you pay $39.99 per month to get your LLC formation at no additional cost, you’re still not getting any registered agent service from Rocket Lawyer unless you pay extra for it ($149.99 without legal services subscription or $112.49 with it). This is another area where IncFile has a massive advantage.

Experience

Rocket Lawyer is one of the industry giants, with an unrivaled 20 million customers served since they opened in 2008. IncFile also has plenty of experience but doesn’t handle the same high volume of customers that Rocket Lawyer does, as IncFile has 250,000+ business formations since 2004.

Customer Support

Both of these companies have generally solid customer service, but they each have some minor shortcomings in this area as well. Rocket Lawyer is such a massive company that it’s no surprise their support is slightly hit or miss. The bigger your operation, the more likely it is that some of your support agents will be less effective than others. We do like that they’re available for 12 hours a day, as they answer the phone from 9 am-9 pm ET Monday through Friday.

IncFile has friendly, helpful representatives in our experience, but their availability isn’t great. It sometimes takes them over 24 hours to respond when you call or email them, which is less than ideal. They’re open from 10 am-7 pm ET on weekdays.

Turnaround Times

IncFile and Rocket Lawyer have similar processing times, and they both vary depending on your state of formation. Both companies also offer expedited service to their LLC formation customers, and the rates for this rush processing vary by state.

Order Tracking

IncFile has a nifty order status tracking tool on its website, which updates in real-time to show you exactly where you stand in the formation process. Rocket Lawyer uses a standard order confirmation email system, and you can also check your order status when you log into your account on their website.

Registered Agent Service

Every LLC in America is required to designate a registered agent, which is a person or business entity that receives important document deliveries (like service of process) from your state government, informs you of the receipt, then forwards the documents to you. This is so crucial because the state needs to have a reliable means of contacting your business at any time.

IncFile has an annual rate of $119 for registered agent service, while Rocket Lawyer has a price point of $149.99 for this service. Keep in mind that IncFile also includes a full year of registered agent free with any LLC service package, which Rocket Lawyer does not.

Customer Reviews

Rocket Lawyer gets strong reviews from its customers. They have more than 3,000 reviews across the web, and their average rating scores are quite high. The news is even better for IncFile, as they have nearly 16,000 reviews available online, and they’re almost entirely positive in nature. Clearly, both of these companies are very popular with their customers.

Ease of Use

Both of these companies offer business services that are tremendously easy to use. They also both have well-designed, user-friendly websites. Rocket Lawyer and IncFile are equals in this area.

Additional Services

There is quite a bit of overlap between these companies when it comes to additional services, as they both offer registered agent service, annual reports, and other common business services. However, Rocket Lawyer also has some unique services that IncFile doesn’t provide, due in part to their commitment to providing a wide variety of both business and personal services.

For example, Rocket Lawyer offers its clients a broad selection of services to assist them with things like home ownership, estate planning, and divorce. They also provide access to business attorneys for consultations. These are all services that IncFile does not offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers.

If I Decide to Use IncFile, Which Package Should I Choose?

When choosing from IncFile’s LLC formation packages, we typically favor their Silver package, which has a price tag of $0 (plus state fee). This option provides you with your LLC formation itself, along with 12 months of registered agent service.

This is the lowest price we’re aware of anywhere for the combination of formation and registered agent! If you want some more advanced features and don’t mind spending a bit more, we also like their Gold package ($149 + state fee), which adds an EIN and an operating agreement, along with some other features like S corporation tax election and a decorative binder to hold your business documents in.

Is IncFile as Good as Other LLC Services?

Is IncFile the best LLC service? That’s one of our most asked questions. In short, they certainly are one of the best. For a close up look at how they compare to other top-rated LLC services, check out our comparisons below:

Does IncFile Handle Extra State Requirements Like New York Publication?

Unfortunately, they do not. While some of their competitors like ZenBusiness provide comprehensive formation service that takes care of every possible step in the process, IncFile does not offer assistance with state-specific requirements for NY publication.

When we called them to clarify, they said that publication requirements “need to be taken care of with the state directly.”

Which Service Has Fewer Upsells?

Both of these companies do a pretty good job of avoiding the nonstop upsells that make some of their competitors hard to trust.

The only minor exception to this is that Rocket Lawyer does make several attempts to get you to upgrade to their legal services subscription plan, but because the subscription includes free LLC formation service for new subscribers (and has a 7-day free trial), we don’t really have much of a problem with this.

Do These Services Share My Information With Third Parties?

One aspect of Rocket Lawyer’s service that we really appreciate is the fact that they don’t push third-party offers on their clients, instead choosing to focus on their own products and services.

We can’t say the same about IncFile, although they’re not nearly as bad in this area as some of their competitors. IncFile does have a couple of “special offers” on their LLC formation service package select screen that involve sharing your info with third parties, specifically with Bank of America and a web-hosting company called SnapWeb.

Does Either of These Services Have a Refund Policy?

Rocket Lawyer has an excellent refund policy. As long as you request your refund within 30 days of your initial purchase date, they will provide a refund with no questions asked.

IncFile has a more restrictive policy, unfortunately. If you order LLC service from them, you can only request a refund before they submit payment to your formation state, which typically happens within 24 hours, and there is a $30 processing fee involved. After they’ve sent your payment to the state, there are no more refunds available.

Which LLC Formation Website Is Faster?

The turnaround times for Rocket Lawyer and IncFile are nearly identical, because they both use the same criteria to calculate them.

Both of these companies base their processing estimates on how quickly each individual state processes LLC formations, so although one or the other may be a day or two faster in a few isolated states, in most states they are very close competitors.

Can I Just Form an LLC On My Own, Without a Service?

You always have the option to form your own LLC without any assistance, and quite a few entrepreneurs do choose this route. We don’t typically recommend the DIY option to our readers though, because the rules and regulations regarding LLC formations vary from state to state, and it can be a hassle to learn the exact requirements of your formation state.

In addition, the DIY route doesn’t provide the same peace of mind that we receive from hiring a reputable professional service like Rocket Lawyer or IncFile.
